Unless they have been held devices and cartridges of history in good working conditions, our holiday only until the end of this side of the road irregular pixel is through only a little known treasure called emulation. Through emulation, you can participate in most of your favorite games of recent, including video games made for Commodore, Atari, and designers. Emulation means skill in the method or a machine to imitate a new program or a tool and that the steps in the belief that the implementation is a real machine of some others. Such as, you will find the courses that enable an Apple Mac to play your PC. 1 All that gobbledy gook not really suggest that too much and soon discovers that with all the appropriate emulator, your PC can play their favored activities above.

With the tremendous success of games like World of Warcraft and EverQuest, a good number of consumers now believe of personal computer games when they hear the term role-playing game (RPG). What some consumers-particularly younger gamers-don’t recognize is that RPGs have been around for over 30 years and don’t necessarily call for a leading-of-the-line console or personal computer program to play. Even though the two forms of gaming are comparable in most respects, tabletop games enable a a lot wider range of possibilities than their computerized counterparts.

On the surface, tabletop RPGs look a lot like laptop or computer RPGs (CRPGs), and with very good reason-a number of of the most common pc games are based on Dungeons &amp Dragons, the very first and most widely played tabletop RPG. Like pc gamers, tabletop role-players generate characters (game alter-egos) who adventure via an imaginary world. 1 player, the Game Master (GM), is in charge of making the world, taking on the roles of characters not controlled by players, and resolving actions and events making use of the game’s rules program. In short, the GM performs all the functions of the software program in a CRPG.

Although a personal computer can usually deal with the simple game rules a lot quicker than a human GM, player actions in CRPGs are limited to those coded into the software program. For example, a character may possibly be able to sneak past, attack, or even quickly speak a pair of guards, but other alternatives are merely not on the market. A human GM, on the other hand, can adapt the rules program to manage anything the players can dream up. If a player in a tabletop game wants to attempt to frighten those guards away by orchestrating a Scooby-Doo-style haunting, the human GM merely wants to choose how to apply the game rules to this scenario.

A human GM can also generate and modify the story lines of a game to fit character backgrounds, personalities, and motivations. This sort of individual customization offers additional opportunities for collaborative storytelling and character development. Even although instant messaging and voice software program makes it possible for pc gamers to conduct in character conversations, such role-playing is somewhat pointless, given that the software program is unable to react to the details revealed by way of character interaction. For the reason that the plot remains the exact same regardless of the characters involved, the players are unlikely to really feel that they have a personal stake in the outcome of the story.

In addition to permitting for a lot more player actions and additional customized stories, tabletop RPGs permit players additional option in game genre and tone. Generic or adaptable rules systems, such as GURPS and QAGS, enable players to produce characters and stories for any kind of game world that they want to explore. Unless they have programming abilities and lots of totally free time, laptop or computer gamers are limited to the games out there on the marketplace, which tend to be restricted to a couple of preferred genres for marketing and advertising factors.

Ultimately, the superiority of tabletop RPGs lies in their capability to enable the players to engage in collaborative storytelling. CRPGs can mimic the most simple elements of standard role-playing, but the characters are ultimately just pawns in a story produced by the game’s designers. With tabletop games, players can let their imaginations run wild and take an active role in story, which is a lot far more satisfying.

Now you could have seen my Top five 1st Individual Shooter PC Games of the 90’s write-up and you might bear in mind how addicted I am to gaming. Well to add to that addiction I am also low-cost. It can be confirmed simply by asking my wife.

Along that thought I went searching to the world wide web to supply me with a couple of additional no cost games to play that had been definitely totally free to play and download. No matter whether they had been GNU open source or just no cost simply because they had been older I decided to attempt out a bunch of them. I wanted to get a couple of to play from time to time in between my counter-strike addiction spells. Below is my list of the top five absolutely free games in terms of playability and maintain-capability.

five Urban Terror
Urban terror was originally a mod for quake three that I had downloaded back in the day soon after quake three was released. It was a beneficial competitor to counter-strike. It had smooth graphics and great play styles. Rapidly Forward to these days and the mod is now ported over to the ioquake three engine and is a cost-free full game download. That keeps it in spending budget as you no longer have to own quake three to play this game. That is a win win. Only downside is the quantity of individuals playing it. Possibly I missed the spot that every person was going to play this game. It would have been #four if it had been not for the lack of players. It is out there in windows, Linux, and mac flavors too.

four Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
This game also began life as a mod to one more game known as Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Also built on the quake three engine. Now distributed as a no cost game and ported to the id tech three, ioqauke three engine. No cost to download and play. Lots of individuals still playing this game which makes it enjoyable. The action is quickly paced and the weapons are World War II style. It is a excellent game. Graphics are dated yet which kept it out of the top three. It is obtainable in windows, Linux, and mac versions.

three Open-Arena
Now to the meat of the discussion. Open-arena is a freeware remake of Quake III arena. It has single player and multiplayer levels and a significant following for on-line game play. The graphics are tight and the gameplay is quick. It feels like a cross between quake III and the original unreal tournament. I liked this game. It comes in Linux, mac and windows versions too.

2 America’s Army
Ahh the Army’s greatest recruitment tool ever! No kidding there are a lot of persons playing this game. The graphics are awesome which created it beat out Open-Arena for me. The only factor that kept AA from becoming the number 1 was the game-style. If you have played Tom Clancy’s Rainbow six then you have played AA. At least style wise they are extremely comparable. It is a lot more a combat simulation than a game which bumped it back to number 2 for me. Meaning the deaths are realistic which makes it much less enjoyable as a game. Still a keeper if you have a different friend that likes playing America’s Army as you can squad up and have a great time as a team.

1 Warsow
OK so you are thinking that you in no way heard of Warsow? That is a wonderful factor as it is a pretty addictive game. Take Open-Arena but make the models look cartoonish and make it a lot more of a arcade game and you got Warsow. The coding and graphics are tight. The game-play is stellar with various modes of multi-player to opt for from. There are tons of people today playing it. So why is it superior than Open-arena? Well because they cartooned the player models the frame rate was bumped up large time to make the game super smooth even in highly high resolutions. It definitely is a crisp game. You can play it on Linux, mac and windows. There are tons of player created maps out there and the server listing is correct in the game. I still have this 1 loaded on my key game machine and my function laptop (that has low end video) and can appreciate it on both.

So there you have it, just a couple of no cost games but there are tons additional out there. I went via over 20 totally free games that I discovered to weed down this list for you. Now it is your turn to get out there and play. Go get your game on!

Online Game Rental Review

The best thing for a gamer these days is to rent video games online because it is very convenient. You can actually be playing your game rental, while you are getting more game rentals online from your computer at home. When you rent video games online they ship them directly to you and they usually come right away. Here is online game rental review of the top services for game rentals online. Then you can save the best service to rent video games online, so you have the best experience in your game rentals online.

Online Game Rental Review – Why Rent Video Games Online?

My online game rental review will be very good because I made the transition about a year ago and tried a few different online game rental services. I will never go back to a different plan of playing and renting games again. You can actually save a lot more money by using an online video game rental service, rather than buying new games from the store. It is also cheaper than going to local game rental store in your city. Most people will rack up late fees from video rental stores. When you rent video games online, you can return it whenever you want and play the game rental as long as you want, until you want to return it and get some more online game rentals. So just keep the game until you beat it or don’t want it anymore, therefore there is no reason to even buy brand new games and pay upwards to 60 and 70 dollars. Also most services will actually pay for you postage both ways for the game rentals online.

Online Game Rental Review – Selecting Game Rental Service

The best way to find the correct service for you, is to inspect for the online game rental service that offers the best plan for you and what games they offer for the systems. Certain services only offer games for certain gaming systems. You also want to do research to see how long the service will take to ship your game rental. Choose an online game rental service that is located near where you live. That is a titanic detail for a hardcore gamer, but if you are not then shipping time probably won’t be a factor.

Before you see read the online game rental review, you need to determine how great you would rent video games online every month. This will help you pick a splendid plan from the online game rental services. Also make sure to keep track of your games and envelopes, so you don’t lose them because they will charge you for their games. When I did my personal research to rent video games online, I looked for feature set, available game rental plans, game selection, shipping time, and the search quality in the services. This will allow you to perform a good decision financially and fulfill your gaming needs. Use more than one online game rental review and visit the services at their home page.

Online Game Rental Review – Cost Of Some Top Services Available

Gamefly will cost you $12.95 to get 2 online game rentals and then the monthly rate is $22.95. They have about 311 Wii console game to choose from and 214 PS3 games that can rent. There are 338 Xbox 360 games and 1529 Playstation 2 games that you can choose from the wide selection. there are 403 PSP game rentals and they have up to 640 Nintendo DS game rentals you can choose from online. As I said before, it all depends what console you have because that is most likely how you want to rent video games online. My first choice was Gamefly until I found another online game rental service to use. Gamefly although is one of the top online game rental services out there. They have a broad selection and is a good price. They offer free trials to see how well you like to rent video games online. The negative thing is they don’t have aid by telephone but they do it by email, which I didn’t like. Undoubtedly they are one of the best online game rental services.

Gameznflix is a the cheapest online game rental service that I used, but then I found out how they get you. When renting a DVD they made me get a separate plan from the game rental opinion. They have a cheaper price which lures people, but they don’t really have large selection to choose when you rent video games online with them. They only charge $12.99 a month to collect 2 online game rentals, then the montly cost stays at the same amount. Seems pretty edifying right? Well they only have 120 Wii games, 68 PS3 games, 165 Xbox games, and only 600 PS2 Games. I’m elegant sure they don’t have any DS or PSP games to decide from. Even though they have a smaller selection, it is still a cheaper contrivance when choosing a way to get game rentals. If you can only afford $12.99 a month this is still a good online game rental service to sign up with because they have a descent amount of games. Impartial depends how much gaming you do.

Online Game Rental Review – Do Research Before Signing Up!

Gamefly and Gameznflix are the two services I outmoded and personally liked Gamefly more. There are many other online game rental services out there to choose from. It’s important to remember to do good research before you notice up with a service and determine your gaming needs monthly. Online game rentals is absolutely the best thing ever in video gaming. All you have to do is walk to your mailbox and catch your games. You can figure out how to send your old games in time toreceive the new ones also. There are so many benefits when you start to rent video games online, why haven’t you signed up to a service yet? This also can be a fabulous Christmas gift to someone you know that is an avid video gamer. This would be the best note for any gamer. Unbiased pay for the initial cost and the a couple months worth and it will be an awesome gift for someone. That package would only cost you under $50 and would make a gamers head sail. What are you waiting for? Start getting game rentals online right now!!

I’m actually a stout fan of console platforms which may be surprising since I’m about to tell you all why the PC makes a better gaming platform. Add to this fact that I am also an Apple and OSX user and not a PC/Windows user and you’re probably already starting to think I’ve lost my mind. I own a Sega Genesis (the original, thank you) and a Playstation 2 and I consider myself a casual gamer.

But before you derride me for not being ‘hardcore’ enough of a gamer or not having any way to know that PC gaming is better, read on my friend because if you unexcited believe consoles are the better platform then you are incorrect. Sure for us casual gamers they are fun and easy to utilize, but simply plug into a game on the PC and you’ll see the difference quickly and fiercely.

My experience with PC gaming began in my freshman year of college. I was being introduced for the first time to a place where the internet was always connected and always fast and I had a new computer to explore this colossal (and for me at the time) life altering ability to be online anytime; it was heaven I tell you. I only had dial up at home! Living in a college dorm setting as a freshman with lots of other equally clueless freshman, I went to work meeting people, making friends, doing insane and crazy things in the dorm and really just exploring all that college living had to offer in the dorms.

One of these things included getting into LAN based games such as Half Life (sniper mode), UnReal Tournament, and other common games that could be played on a LAN (local area network). I’ll admit in high school a few friends and I hooked up a LAN in the computer lab for the original Doom which was pretty sweet and at the time consoles could never dream of doing that.

But this whole sense of community from playing online with others from my computer was great and was only amplified by the fact that during play we left our dorm doors open so you’d hear sound effects (like gunfire) from the other rooms, and of course players yelling or cursing when they got sniped or missed a target. Consoles offered this excitement standard for only 2 players, sometimes 4 in the same room staring at the same split screen.

Yes, technology has changed and now consoles can do what these games once did (such as XBox Live) but then again connecting on the LAN was free and no extra charge to play games with others on it. So the sense of community mixed with the fact that each player has their have screen is a big plus for PC gaming and not so much for most console gaming.

After that first year of college I went and bought Half Life for my PS2 and it was terrible. Not only was the multiplayer aspect taken away, but the PS2 handled the game poorly, the play actions were different, and overall it unbiased wasn’t as fulfilling.

Which leads to the next reason why PCs make a better platform then consoles. PCs can be customized in so many ways and for gamers that means more RAM, more storage, better video cards, awesome sound systems, stunning displays, and honest one sick gaming machine. Consoles? One size fits all pretty considerable. Many devoted gamers claim that their custom gaming machine is an extension of their personalitites and gives more fulfillment to their gaming.

While I’m not into that level of gaming, I do see how the customiziable aspect of PCs can make gaming on them remarkable more fulfilling and entertaining. And power really is one of the big pros of PC gaming versus Console gaming because in essence the amount of speed and graphics power in your PC system is up to you and limitless whereas once again consoles come as they are pretty much.

With a souped up computer, one can take gaming to the next level and delicate much obliterate things such as load times, game freezes, and waiting to play the next scene out whereas consoles one is at the mercy of the console’s limitations. So why do I own consoles and why do I play more on consoles. Maybe it is nostaliga. I enjoy playing 16bit goodness on my Sega Genesis and older games on PS2 because it brings back memories. Not to mention having a classic system such as Nintendo or Sega at a party is downright fun and gets a lot of compliments.

Plus there is the aspect of hardcore gaming. Consoles tend to offer fun games that you can just pop in and play a game with. PC games tend to be more serious and more involved today. In the past PC games and console games were pretty much the same, honest games for the sake of games with simple graphics, simple controls, and basic concepts unhurried the game.

Yet even though I enjoy my Sega quite well, I’m not blind to the fact that raw computing power and technology that is customizable beats any console any day when you want to game like a real gamer. PCs offer the power, the storage, the customizability, and the immersive experience that consoles just can’t match.

I decided to write this guide after spending about fifteen years trying many of the free software packages available on the Internet. I always enjoyed using free software, mostly because it is free and I am a cheap skate. Nevertheless, I know that I am not alone and that there are many people out there who part my spend thrift ways. Most likely if you are reading this, then you might just be one of those kindred spirits. In the course of these years I have found some software that was great and some that was not so great. This is a culmination of those experiences in a hope that I can save you some time and frustration.

One of the biggest annoyances associated with free software was the constant and annoying nag screens as well as spyware which made the software not worth the price of free. For all of you up and coming software developers, please feel free to offer your software for free. You can even throw in some ads to generate some revenue, feel free to even require payment to unlock special features, but please do not make the ads a hindrance to using the program itself. All of the software mentioned throughout this article is 100% free. Where it is applicable I will make mention of the software package’s commercial equivalent.

First off, I would be remiss if I did not make mention of software that makes it possible to even run all of these software packages. I am of course, speaking of the Operating System itself. Currently, the free Operating Systems are based on Linux and they are all fair different Kernel builds of the same System developed by Linus Torvalds. There are many different versions of this OS but there are only a couple of which that stand out above the others. As a tag, I will mention the Linux Operating Systems but some of the free software that I will be mentioning later in this article will be only Windows compatible.

Operating Systems:

Ubuntu – Equivalent Microsoft Windows XP

Ubuntu is a really clean and stable Operating System. Ubuntu has really made a name for itself and is considered one of the best free Operating Systems available. The OS has a very easy to install interface which makes it as simple to install as Microsoft Windows. There are instances where some hardware may not be compatible with the Linux Operating System, but that is becoming a rare occurrence.

Ubuntu also comes in a LiveCD version which can be booted from your PC so that you can try it out without committing to installing the OS first. In many cases you can simply go to your hardware manufacturer’s website and download drivers that are specifically written for Linux. You can find more information about Ubuntu at this website, http://www.ubuntu.com/

gOS – Equivalent Microsoft Windows XP or Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard

gOS is the Operating System that is being distributed with the new $300.00 PCs from Wal-Mart. However, the developers of the OS have been kind enough to provide the Operating System as a free download from their website. Quite possibly this is because they are hopeful that they can get the market to turn a little from Microsoft to Linux. This one is a microscopic tough to really associate with Windows because it is much more like the Mac OS, although it does run on PCs.

This is a really solid Operating System and the layout makes it that much simpler for the user to obtain common task. While many Windows based games are not compatible with the Linux Operating System, there are utilities that will allow you to emulate a Windows PC in the Linux environment so that you can play your favorite games. You can derive more information about gOS at this website, http://www.thinkgos.com/

Now that we have the Operating System out of the way, what would a PC be without some free Utilities? These utilities will ensure that your PC runs efficiently and securely. There are a plethora of free utilities available for free on the Internet. Many of these do not work well, are buggy, or simply do not perform to par with what they claim. Here are some of the very best utilities available.

Utilities:

Security

ZoneAlarm – Equivalent Norton 360

ZoneAlarm has come a long way since its first appearance on the Internet. ZoneAlarm came at a time when personal PC security was becoming a major issue with many people. ZoneAlarm was first introduced as a personal firewall. However, over the years the developers have been actively increasing the features of their software that have now made it a complete security and Antivirus suite.

ZoneAlarm is by far the best free chubby security suite available. There is also an option to pay for a premium license which will give you many more features. However, the standard free version is sufficient for most users. To find out more information about ZoneAlarm you can go to this website, http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/home.jsp

Advanced WindowsCare Personal Edition

WindowsCare is a very expedient system maintenance and cleaning program. This software will monitor you PC and notify you if it finds a problem. It will even check through your registry and search out any errors or invalid entries. WindowsCare will check your system for errors and will well-kept old and useless files from your hard drive.

File Recovery

Undelete Plus

If you have ever inadvertently deleted a file, you may have been relieved to find that file still resting safely in your recycle bin. However, I had the experience where I had even emptied my recycle bin before I had realized the file was among the many, ready to be trashed. Luckily I found this really awesome free file recovery software called Undelete Plus.

This recovery software will not only find recently deleted files, but it will also find files that are still residing on the hard drive after a format, or even an FDISK. This little file recovery utility was a lifesaver and I highly recommend that you get it. To find out more about Undelete Plus you can go to this website, http://www.undelete-plus.com/

Compression Utility

IZArc – Equivalent WinZip and WinRAR

IZArc is a full featured compression utility. This file compression tool handles all of the celebrated compression formats such as ZIP, RAR and ACE. However, it also supports just about every other compression format available. The interface is very clean and easy to use. This is simply the best free archiving tool around. You can find more information about IZArc by going to this website, http://www.izarc.org/

CD and DVD Burning Software

CDBurnerXP – Equivalent Nero

CDBurnerXP is a great little CD and DVD authoring software that is completely 100% free. This burning suite can handle authoring CDs and DVDs. It is also reliable of burning disk images and it can even convert Nero’s NRG files to ISO, or even BIN. CDBurnerXP allows you to burn audio disk without any gaps between your music tracks. One of the best features is that CDBurnerXP is capable of burning Blu-Ray and HD-DVD disk. To get more information about CDBurnerXP you can go to this website, http://cdburnerxp.se/

Productivity Software:

Office Software

OpenOffice – Equivalent Microsoft Office 2003

OpenOffice has been around for some time now and it objective keeps getting better with each release. OpenOffice is a complete Office suite that is excellent of doing everything that Microsoft Office can do. Included in the package is Writer. This is the equivalent to Microsoft’s Word and is just as easy to use. This software comes with a built in spell checker and also gives you the ability to update with custom dictionaries or even different languages.

Impress is also included in this software suite and is used for creating dynamic PowerPoint presentations. Although, this presentation package comes with very few pre-built templates, it is possible to secure many on the Internet which you can use for free. Impress is a very spruce and neat program which makes it simple for even a new user to master in a short amount of time.

The other programs in this software suite are just as impressive. There is Math which is used for creating mathematical equations, Draw that is broken-down to execute vector drawings and Calc which is used in creating spreadsheets. OpenOffice is righteous of reading, creating, and even converting Microsoft Office documents. The totality of this software suite makes it a necessary addition to your PC and you bag it all for free. To find out more about OpenOffice you can go to this website, http://www.openoffice.org/

PDF Files

Foxit PDF Reader – Equivalent Adobe Reader

If your experience with Adobe’s Reader is anything like mine, you have gone crazy waiting for the software to load and actually render your PDF document. If you have done it in a browser window from a website, the experience is even more excruciating. Thankfully, somebody came along and did something about it. The developers at Foxit Software have done a wonderful job in designing a free software application that can read, create, and even convert other file formats to PDF.

Some of the features are completely free, however, to use all of the features available you must purchase a license for a nominal fee. Regardless, this is a software download that is well worth the time. You are sure to save yourself a lot of time in productivity and frustration by using the Foxit software.

Internet

Firefox Web Browser Equivalent There is no comparison

Although, pretty much all web browsers are free, I feel that I must make mention of the best browser on the available. Firefox is a web browser which is a derivative of the Mozilla Project. Mozilla is an Commence Source software that was aimed at a security and feature rich browser. The developers of Firefox have taken their browser to the next level while unruffled considering the average computer user.

One of the nice features of the Firefox browser is the ability to alter its look by using easily installed themes. The Firefox browser also speeds up your browsing time. Firefox has a very useful download manager which will ensure that if your computer freezes or crashes, the download will consume up where it left off. To get more information about Firefox you can go to this website, http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Games:

This guide would not be complete without some games to blow your time with. There are several games that are free on the Internet. Nevertheless, I have found that many of them are buggy, impossible to download, or I could never connect to a server to play. Therefore, here are a couple of games that were simply awesome to play and easy to setup.

America’s Army

America’s Army is a MMPOG (Massive Multi-Player Online Game) that was developed by the United States Army. The games is about as steady to life as it gets and the attention to detail is unsurpassed. In order to actually get to play in the online servers you must complete the basic training course. The online servers are setup in such a plan so that you may have to actually complete additional training such as, Airborne, Ranger, or Special Forces. This is a very awesome game and well worth the download. This game is sure to give you hours of enjoyable game play.

However, it is a big download so if you settle to go for it, you had better use the Firefox browser with its download manager, or find another that will resume the download if you should lose your Internet connection. If you want to learn more about America’s Army you can go to this website, http://www.americasarmy.com/

Tribes

If you want quick and dirty battle action, then Tribes is the game for you. Although, this game was originally only available commercially, Sierra started giving it away free when they released Tribes Vengeance. Nevertheless, the original Tribes is absolutely awesome and I have been playing it for years. It is a highly addictive game that just never gets old.

In tribes you play online against a community of gamers from around the world. In this game you blow up stuff, kill your enemies, and capture their flag to win the match. The thing that I like most about this game is that when you die in battle, you instantly respawn so there is no waiting for the next match to begin. If you want to learn more about Tribes you can go to this website, http://www.download.com/Starsiege-Tribes-full-install/3000-7453_4-10294998.html? tag=lst-0-3 This link is long because it is also the download link where you can actually get the game.

Alright, so we have covered some of the most useful software, as well as, some fun stuff. There are so many free pieces of software available that it is almost impossible to cloak them all. However, this small sampling is enough to get you started on your way to some productive and fun times on your PC.

The Internet has absolutely loads of fun, free online games. However, most are simply Flash-based puzzle games or other casual games offering a few minutes of entertainment. The selection of quality free PC Games available online is considerably smaller than their casual counterparts, but they do exist. Here is several of my favorite free games, targeted at the more “hardcore” gaming audience.

Battalion

Fans of the incredibly popular turn-based strategy game Near Wars, available for Nintendo GBA or Nintendo DS will be sure to care for this online strategy game. It’s very similar to the Reach Wars series, but it allows players to play online against others on all kinds of unique maps. It’s been in development for several years, with periodic updates, and it’s certainly one of the better turn-based free strategy games available online today.

Saga

Saga is a Massively Multiplayer Online Real Time Strategy Game (MMORTS). While not usually 100% free, it is often offered from various MMO websites for free, with free booster packs and such. It allows users to create their own army, build their own city, and fight (in quests against computer controlled enemy or against other players) to further their kingdom. It’s really a unique game, with decent graphics and a very Warhammer or other miniature wargame feel to it. Set in a fantasy world, Saga is one of the few games out there designed for players who want to a quality MMORTS. Booster packs may be purchased with real money, or earned in-game through questing and other ways of generating in-game income. Combat is in real-time and requires strategy, finesse and plenty of tactical troop movements.

Combat Arms

Free online first person shooter (FPS) games are plentiful on the Internet today, but many of them are plagued by slow servers, buggy game performance, and loads of players using hacks and glitches to their advantage. However, one that stands out above the rest is Combat Arms, produced by the Korean company, Nexon. It’s really a fun FPS, with loads of good maps, nice graphics (for a free game), and addicting game play. Like most online FPS games, it uses a format similar to Counter-Strike, but instead of having to wait a long time between in-game deaths to restart, it offers fast respawns, like the well-liked Battlefield online FPS series. For FPS fans and others looking to start playing fun first person shooters, Combat Arms is definitely worth checking out.

There are many different cell phones on the market, which makes it very difficult to know which phones are worth the money. Cell phones have been designed now with so many different features and functions it can be hard to know which really work. The Motorola Droid X is the latest phone to hit the market and people are going crazy for it. If you are looking for a new cell phone then you might want to check out the Motorola Droid X
to see if it is worth buying.

The Motorola Droid X has become the newest phone to hit the Verizon Wireless store and it is nothing short of incredible. The Motorola Droid X is one of the best Android smartphones you can get but some people might not like the overall size of the phone. The Motorola Droid X is a very big phone coming in with a 4.3 prance LCD display cover which is one of the largest in the market. Motorola Droid X is very light and thin but it is kind of long and somewhat awkward to hold. The camera that comes on the Motorola Droid X is a miniature bit unusual too because it sticks out more than other smartphones which can be annoying. You have the standard hardware buttons on the phone which is great because you have easy access to the menu and home screen. One odd thing about the Motorola Droid X is that there are no buttons on the left side of the phone. All of your buttons are either on the bottom of the phone or on the left side, which takes getting used to for some people.

The Motorola Droid X has a touch keyboard which is very large on the screen and makes typing rather efficient. There is a cool text-entry method so that you can write what you need to without moving your fingers across the whole keypad. Phone quality is fairly decent in large part because of the large antenna on the phone. The Motorola Droid X has three microphones total and two of them are for canceling out noises. There is no background noise on this phone for the most allotment and reception is pretty clear. The speakerphone on the Motorola Droid X allows you to be outside and hear someone very clearly without having to turn the volume all of the map up. Voice recognition works better on the Motorola Droid X than it does most phones and it is ideal for someone on the road.

The Motorola Droid X uses the Verizon EV-DO Rev A network which provides you with great downloading speed for all of your data needs. The phone can be a hotspot for up to five different devices and it even can upload fairly snappy. The Internet capabilities on this phone are great and you can look at any website within a few seconds. If you are going to a website with intense graphics however you do have to wait a exiguous longer for the pages to load correctly. Overall though the Motorola Droid X provides superior browsing capabilities and is also great for uploading documents or other items in a flash.

The battery with the Motorola Droid X is also really proper and it can last for up to 10 hours of talk time which is amazing. The gargantuan screen does mean however that you will probably have to charge the phone more often than you might a smaller phone. Having high-resolution displays will create a drain on the battery and that goes with cell phones or computers so it is not a big deal. If the phone is unprejudiced sitting and not being obsolete then you can go five days without recharging the phone or longer so the battery does exceed other phones. Batteries are a major portion of having a cell phone and you want something that will last through the day and not wear out within a couple hours of talking on it. This phone really exceeds expectations when it comes to cell phones and battery life so it is great for a person that travels.

The Motorola Droid X runs on the Android 2.1 operating system and it comes with the latest MotoBlur extensions. The Motorola Droid X has a single interface so you can sign into a lot of accounts at the same time. Later this summer there will be an upgrade to the operating system that will allow you to run Adobe Flash 10.1 which is really nice. Adobe Flash is needed for a lot of websites and this is going to be the first phone to include it into their operating system. With the Motorola Droid X you can glean updates from everyone on Twitter, MySpace and Facebook with the click of one button which is great. Twitter residence updates and Facebook walls are not very good on this phone and the resolution on those websites can run a little lower than normal. The MotoBlur signs into all of your accounts for you at the same time which might be a little crazy for some and then it places all messages in your inbox. If you only have one account then you should be okay and if you do not use those websites then it will be even better.

The MotoBlur software also has small freezes sometimes and all of the accounts signing in at once can make the phone very dumb. It is similar to running multiple programs on your computer and then the computer being slow to startup. The Motorola Droid X has similar issues when it comes to running the various accounts and programs and this can construct a little frustration for people. The best thing to do to avoid that is to not log into all of the programs or accounts at once or not use them at all. The Motorola Droid X does have somewhat of a faster browsing capability but it is not powerful better than other phones on the market. The Motorola Droid X also has big performance when it comes to handling gaming and most games hurry very smoothly on the phone. The resolution for gaming is very good and the screen makes hitting buttons easier when you are in a game.

The Motorola Droid X also has a GPS system which will take note of where you are at when you are looking for specific directions. You can expend the Google Maps Navigation on the phone and find exactly what you are looking for and how to get there. The GPS is great especially if you fade a lot or you have worry finding locations without proper directions. The Motorola Droid X also has a designated folder for other applications you can engage and it does not buy up room on the menu screen. A lot of phones will put advertisements all over for things you can buy which can hamper space and be really annoying. With the Motorola Droid X all of the other services and things you can pay for stay in one folder and you can choose to look at it if you wish.

The Motorola Droid X also has 8 gigabytes of built-in memory and it comes with a 16 gigabyte microSD card for even more memory. This phone is great if you are looking to play music or download music since there is a lot of memory included on the phone. The Motorola Droid X plays all types of media files and you even get a free application to listen to various audio files. The stereo on the Motorola Droid X is very good for listening to music and it sounds better than some laptop computers. The Motorola Droid X also comes with an FM radio and 15 presets so you can listen to music without playing your own through the player.

The Motorola Droid X also has an 8 megapixel camera which is very nice and might be the best one ever on a phone. The camera does have the bulky and awkward bump on it which is located on the wait on of the phone. The camera is really good at taking shots during the day and also takes very sharp photos in dimmer light. The Motorola Droid X has a flash on it that is not as grand as some other phones on the market though. The camera is not front-facing and the video-calling software is a exiguous off sometimes. Overall though you can stream video and take pictures without too grand trouble. The qualities of the pictures are great and can be compared to a regular digital camera. The Motorola Droid X takes video at 720p and can capture 24 frames per second which is really worthy. There are a lot of videos you can watch on the phone and it supports most formats so you can watch YouTube videos and even DIVX is supported. Motorola Droid X is also coming out with an application to let you stream the NFL games in tubby this year.

Overall, the Motorola Droid X is a tall phone for the price of 300 dollars which includes a 100 dollar mail-in rebate and a two-year contract. If you have Verizon Wireless now but you have a contract ending in 2010, you can also get the Motorola Droid X for 300 dollars. The Motorola Droid X is probably one of the best smartphones you can recall and it even beats out the HTC Droid Incredible. The Motorola Droid X is not a phone you should get though if you have small hands because of the enormous size of the phone. This phone is great for someone who travels often and needs all of the software a computer has without taking their computer with them on travel. The Motorola Droid X is a great phone that offers many unique features and is built around spacious and excessive features. If you are going to choose an Android phone this year then the Motorola Droid X would be the best choice even if it is a little bigger than the other phones. You can acquire the Motorola Droid X at any Verizon Wireless store and even in some retail stores for about 300 dollars.

Back in the 90’s, PC gamers like me didn’t use Windows for gaming. In the first half of the 90’s Windows wasn’t really worth using, and for much of the second half it didn’t have many good games anyhow. So instead of using Microsoft Windows’ clumsy, industrial gray interface, which always seemed to run like molasses, we’d boot into MS/DOS … Microsoft’s original Disk Operating System, and its world of white text on a solid black screen. From there, it was just a few quick keyboard commands to get our favorite games up and running.

It wasn’t easy sometimes. Sometimes we had to perform “boot disks” with simplified loading instructions, to keep from loading too many things into the 640k of memory that DOS could access. Everything had to run in those 640k … mouse driver, CD/ROM driver, and sound card driver. And configuring sound cards wasn’t easy, since there were so many kinds and they all worked differently. So for every game we installed, we had to select the right originate and model of sound card, vow it our “IRQ” and “DMA” and then listen to audio tests. And we had to do it twice, once for music and once for sound effects.

It’s not quite as difficult now! Nowadays, if you want to play older DOS games, you can use an emulator like DOSBox — available for Macs, and Windows and Linux PCs. And if you follow their step-by-step instructions, you can get your games up and running in no time, and even create desktop shortcuts that you can just double-click to start playing.

Why would you want to do that? Because some of those games are unbelievable! They were amazing back then, and they’re still amazing today. Now you can download the shareware demos in seconds, and sometimes the original authors have even made the full versions available for free. That’s hours and hours of serious gaming, and don’t converse me it’s not worth your time … handheld game consoles like the GBA and Nintendo DS have made retro cool again. This is like that, except on your PC or Mac.

You’re probably familiar with some of the more popular games made back during that time, like the violent and controversial first-person shooters. But in my view, the best games were made by a company called Epic Megagames, before they changed their name to fair “Epic Games” and started making their have controversial games. Here are my two favorites, and at the end you’ll find links where you can legally download the full versions for free.

Tyrian

Before downloading the shareware demo of Tyrian, I thought the best top-down shooter ever was Raiden II, with its earthshaking explosions and unusual plasma laser. After downloading the shareware demo of Tyrian, I practically didn’t need any other game for months. It was that good.

Tyrian’s basic plan is the same as other top-down shooters, but it just has so much more packed into it. It has a long story mode with hilarious dialogue, and a shop with seemingly endless customization options. And it has a unique two-player mode, where one player’s ship can dock into the other and that player can then control a gun turret.

Each time you beat Tyrian’s arcade mode, you unlocked a new ship; up to the “Foodship 9,” which looked like a carrot and was billed as the best edible starfighter ever. Beating arcade mode with the Foodship 9 unlocked a secret two-player minigame that was a clone of Scorched Earth, and was hours and hours of fun.

One Must Topple 2097

My parents wouldn’t let me play Mortal Kombat or even Street Fighter II. When I found out that Epic had made a fighting game that involved robots instead of human beings, though, they let me play it instead. And pretty soon, I realized that it wasn’t just a “consolation prize” … it was, in fact, leaps and bounds ahead of the competition, even the arcade games I’d spent hours watching.

One Must Plunge 2097 included two modes of play: An arcade mode with an immersive storyline, and a tournament mode where you bought add-ons for your 90-foot-tall robot and customized the paint job, or even bought a whole new chassis. Either one had almost infinite replay value, and you could even play two-player matches using your personal robots.

About the only thing “OMF” didn’t have was arenas that went on past a single screen. But the ones that it did have had all kinds of environmental hazards, from spikes to electrified walls to jet fighters strafing the robots. And the robots themselves had all kinds of crazy special attacks, from swinging chains to plasma cannons to shadow duplicates. There was no blood at all, but the sounds of metallic impacts could shake the floor, and debris would go flying … especially when you used a “scrap” or “destruction” finishing move.

The Upshot

These games were amazing back then, and they still are today. And you can download the full versions for free from the following websites: Tyrian can be downloaded here, and One Must Fall 2097 can be downloaded here. Both games have been made available for free by the original creators, and are as far as I know 100% honest to download.

In order to play these games on a modern Mac, or a Windows or Linux PC, you’re going to need to install DOSBox. If you’re using a modern version of Linux, like Ubuntu, you can probably find it by clicking on Adept or Add/Remove Programs and doing a search for DOSBox. Otherwise, go here to download the version you need for the kind of computer you’re using.

You can find instructions on how to utilize DOSBox here. And it might take a bit of figuring out at first, but like I said, you can create desktop shortcuts which will allow you to play your favorite games without having to type things in. You kids have it so much easier than we did in my day!

Have fun!

Video games of all kinds are getting to be a big deal. When you consider that people will camp out overnight at the doorstep of a immense box electronics retailer in order to get the latest X-Box or Playstation product, you know that lots of people must be playing them. Elaborate gaming platforms require a commitment for both the platform and the software and you often end up with storage issues for the game discs. If you are like me, sometimes when you are working online or surfing, you just want to remove a quick break with some mindless, sometimes whimsical fun in the form of a quick video game. Luckily there are dozens of free online gaming sites that are perfect for this. The best one I have seen is Candystand.com, from the Wrigley company.

The free online gaming sites seem to fall into two types: those that offer simple, two dimensional games or those that offer free demo downloads of larger PC games. The problem with the former is that the games are often too slow, while the problem with the latter is that the demo ends too soon. Candystand.com offers about a hundred games that fall into the categories of sports, arcade, card games, puzzles, or multiplayer games. All of the games play through the Shockwave system, so you would need to download this onto your computer (easy if you have a high speed connection). For the games themselves, you may occasionally need to add an extra plug-in to accumulate them to work, but they are all immediately accessible, without long download times.

Most of my favorite games on Candystand come through the Sports category. “Bullpen Blast” is a vivid baseball game where the challenge is for you to pitch a perfect game against the other team. The contrivance the pitcher is controlled and the batter swings at the pitches is reminiscent of the Playstation I major league baseball games. You aim the pitch in the strike zone by clicking on the area and then execute the pitch by sliding your mouse down and flinging it forward, releasing the right mouse button at the appropriate time. The grandstand and the outfield wall is full of advertisements for Wrigley products such as Extra gum or Life Savers. Whoever designed the game was a fan of good pitching because all of the principles come into play. If you throw two fastballs down the middle, for example, the batter is very likely going to hit the second one and spoil your perfect game.

My next common sports game is figure skating. The graphics are as realistic and inviting as they show a young girl skater in a sky blue spangled skate outfit glide onto the rink. Your job is to control her movements with the mouse. Several marked points on the ice indicate jump off points for her to leap up into various maneuvers such as a camel, a triple axel, or a toe loop. By flicking the mouse pointer through the points as the girl glides by, you can launch her into twirls and spins with perfect form. If you miss the mark too far one way or the other, she teeters sideways and ends up sitting down (hard) onto the ice, with a disappointed look on her face.

Some of the action games are fairly elaborate and need extra loading time or additional plug-ins, such as GT racing. That is a three dimensional auto racing simulation nearly as good as Gran Turismo. The Field Goal 3D game starts off with panning shots of a football stadium that zoom down to the solitary kicker at the hash marks. It seems to require lots of RAM to run the define graphics well because when I try to play that one, the screen often freezes (and I am hanging on to an older system with less RAM). 3D snowboarding also runs into freeze problems, but if you have a high hurry connection and more than 256MB RAM you should be able to play all the games smoothly.

The most whimsical and original games are found in the arcade section. “Jetpack Mission” actually starts out with a scenario of a Gumby style character on a mission to establish his sweetheart and he must jetpack around to precarious flat surfaces such as cut watermelon in order to get to her. Another one, Gummi grab, shows a pair of eyes with what look like dentures beneath them opening and closing based on your mouse movements as gummy life savers fall (the more you catch in your mouth, the higher your score). Finally, a wonderful pinball game called “Mixing Factory” shows candy being made as you bang the pinball off of various targets.

Free online gaming sites are there to make money and Wrigley’s Candystand.com is no exception. They are smart about it, however, since many of their games are clever advertisements for their products and they refrain from the excessive banners and pop-ups that plague many other free sites. One site of the position shows gum and life saver products you can buy through a shopping cart. Check out the site sometime when you have a limited time on your hands. You’ll probably slay up registering and bookmarking it, like I did!
